Message from Chris Gloeckner
As you know, my Dad graduated with the class of 1968 He had wanted a commission as a 2Lt. in the Army, but was rejected due to what was believed, at the time, to be a progressive loss of eyesight. He was nearsighted, but, long story short, my Dad never went blind. Being prevented from attaining this goal bothered him the rest of his life. So, he went to work for W.R. Grace & Co. in Manhattan, and worked for them for about five years. He had met my Mom in 1966 and they got married in 1970. I am their oldest, and I have two brothers.
In 1973 he went to work for Stephan Machinery Corp. in Manhasset, NY, which was closer to our home in Levittown, NY. He worked for Stephan for ten years until the company was relocated to Ohio, and then he went back to work in Manhattan for Metropolitan Life Ins. Co., with a PMC '68 classmate, Kevin Fay, (sadly, deceased, approximately 10-11 years ago.)
My Dad worked for MetLife in their computer systems section until it was relocated to Bridgewater, NJ, in 1995. He then took a government job with the Treasury Department at the IRS facility in Holtsville, NY, doing IT work as Treasury revamped it's computer system.
He worked for Treasury until 2008, retiring at 62. His health had started to decline, having been a smoker since he was 16 caught up to him. So, unfortunately, my Dad's last years were not the best. He was hospitalized several times, and then on March 26, 2011, he died of sepsis while in hospital, in Mineola, NY. My brothers and I were there with my Mom when he passed.
It will be 5 years since he passed in a few weeks. I can't believe it has been 5 years already. Losing him hasn't gotten any easier, and I still find myself at times wishing I could ask his advice.
Thank you for remembering my Dad. I get the impression that my Dad was well-regarded by his PMC classmates.
